Best Practices for the Chiropractic Care of Children

Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, Volume 2022

Since vertebral subluxation may affect individuals at any age, chiropractic care may be indicated at any time after birth. As with any age group. However, care must be taken to select adjustment methods most appropriate to the patient's stage of development and overall spinal integrity. Parental education by the chiropractor concerning the importance of evaluating children for the presence of vertebral subluxation is encouraged as are public health initiatives geared toward screening children for vertebral subluxation beginning at birth.

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked a few days to weeks after birth. As the infant grows, learning to hold the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important milestones to have a child checked by a chiropractor. Birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and create irritation to the nervous system causing spinal and cranial misalignments which may be the cause of many newborn health complaints such as Colic, Ear infections, Abnormal posture and head tilt, Asthma, Birth Trauma, constipation & diarrhea and failure to thrive.

As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If left neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood may affect future development of the spine and may impair the nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system can affect the body's ability to function at its best.

Dr. (Steffen) Bye does baby spinal checks. Many other conditions are also treatable, but the above are most common. Dr. (Steffen) Bye has obtained a fellowship in chiropractic pediatrics awarded by the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association. Our clinic has also been a Center of Excellence since 2017.
